Greetings students, families, educators and Montville community members! I am new to Montville this year, but not new to school social work. I would like to take this opportunity to explain a little bit about what services the practice offers. School social workers are part of the collaborative school team that empowers students with the necessary skills to enhance learning. Such skills include pro-social skills, emotional regulation and promoting mindset that supports all students’ ability to achieve. School social work supports the healthy development of the whole child. Support may occur in or outside of the classroom and may also extend to the child’s home (an essential part of his or her school team). Healthy relationships between school and family foster increased student success. Instructional support may occur by helping identify strategies to address individual student needs that might interfere with learning readiness. Additionally, interventions range from individual, to small group, to entire class/grade (2nd Step). Staff and families may seek assistance regarding student concerns as they arise. There may be cause for brief support as life presents many challenges such as relocation, divorce, other life change, loss and/or a sudden change in behavior. Other issues occur over time, such as behaviors influenced by a child’s overall wellness or truancy, and benefit from ongoing intervention. I service all elementary schools and the middle school, which may create a useful bridge for students and families. I also work closely with the on-site school psychologists to supplement the great work they are already doing. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns regarding the services I am able to provide. Families and guardians may also contact your child’s school directly to learn more about how to work together to help your student.
