Principal's Message

A message from Amy Espinoza, Principal:

A child's elementary school years are among the most important in the formation of a successful adult. With the support of their parents and guidance of their teachers, kindergarten through fifth grade students at Dr. Charles E. Murphy School are educated in several ways. Every staff member takes pride in fostering the academic, social, and emotional development of each individual student.

Academic needs are met through the implementation of an ever challenging academic curriculum. Text books such as Imagine It in language arts and Eureka Math in mathematics serve as tools to support student learning. All students participate in the core curriculum to ensure essential skills are mastered. Additionally, students partake in a daily workshop block for reading that identifies areas of need and offers remediation in six-week blocks with students of similar needs. Students who show strength in reading are further challenged through guided reading groups. Reading is a complex, yet fundamental life skill. To ensure all students are continually improving, we remind parents to be sure reading becomes a part of your child's daily routine.

Additionally, students participate in weekly specials. Physical education teaches students the value of exercise while incorporating fun with health and body awareness. Creative expression is facilitated through art and music classes. Research, literary, and computer skills are developed in library classes.

Social and emotional education takes place in many ways. Students are all well instructed in the school-wide expectations delineated in our schools ROCK rules. We value and actively acknowledge Responsibility, Outstanding Effort, Citizenship, and Kindness. Students who earn ROCK tickets are recognized at student-led town meetings and other celebrations of ROCK behavior. In addition, fifth grade students learn life skills in DARE classes.

The parent – school connection is vital to the education process. We welcome parents to be a partner in your child's education. Please volunteer (if possible), introduce yourself to your child's teacher, and help build a supportive relationship. I look forward to working with you and your child to make each student's elementary education a successful and memorable one.
