Message from the Principal 09.04.19

Welcome back for the 2019-2020 school year. Here is your first edition of the Paw Print, our weekly newsletter. Keep your eyes open for the Paw Print, which is sent home electronically on Wednesdays.

  • Thank you for your patience over the past week as we have solidified the procedures for arrival and dismissal. A message was sent home on Friday with the procedures.
  • The following are the prices for breakfast and lunch this year:

Elementary breakfast $1.75, reduced breakfast $.30

Elementary lunch $3.00, reduced lunch price $.40

Please be advised that ice cream is sold on Fridays. Kindergarten students will be able to buy ice cream beginning in October so they have time to get used to the routines in the cafeteria before being able to get up and buy ice cream after lunch.

  • Students will be learning the school-wide rules/expectations during school this week. As part of our Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) program, students are recognized for making good choices by earning Oakdale Tiger Paws. When a classroom earns 100 paws, they are rewarded with a paw charm for their PBIS necklace. If your child has their necklace from last year, we ask that they bring it to school with them this week so they can continue adding paws to it. If your child is a kindergarten student, new to the school, or does not have their necklace at home then we will be giving them a necklace soon. We can't wait to start earning those paws!
  • Here are a couple of important dates:
  • Open House: Wed., 9/11, 5:15-6:15 p.m. Students are welcome to attend with their families to give a tour of the school and make a visit to the classroom.
  • Summer Reading Logs are due to the classroom teacher by Friday, September 6th.

Thank you for your patience this week. We spent the past few days assessing how many of our students are true walkers and how many of our students are being dropped off and picked up. It is our goal to facilitate the safest and most efficient arrival and drop-off procedures possible during this school year. The arrival procedure will remain pretty much the same as years past, but it will be reviewed below for everyone. Please read the dismissal procedures carefully since this process will be new.

Arrival: School begins promptly at 8:45 (there was a typo in the original letter sent home to families this summer). Students may be dropped off by vehicle at 8:30 AM on the back playground once an adult is present. Students are not to be dropped off until an adult begins supervising drop-off. Please say your goodbyes to your child prior to the time they are exiting the vehicle. Students are to exit vehicles ONLY on the passenger side once the vehicle has reached the drop off point. If your child cannot exit the car on the passenger side then you MUST park your car in a marked parking spot and escort your child through the parking lot to the entrance. We are trying to unload 5-6 cars at a time to keep the line moving. We cannot hold up the line or have any child in the path of moving cars. This will be strictly enforced.

Cars will exit the parking lot in one line. Passing other vehicles in the line is strictly prohibited to ensure the safety of everyone. Students will be supervised in the gymnasium until school begins when they will be escorted to their classrooms. Drop-off ends promptly at 8:40 AM; after that time parents/guardians must park their car in a marked parking spot and escort their child through the parking lot all the way to entrance. Please do not park your car in a "no parking area" or alongside the sidewalk and do not drop your child off without an escort through the parking lot.

Students walking to school will follow the sidewalks to the appropriate entrance.

Dismissal: School ends at 3:20. In order to load buses in a timely manner, the dismissal process will begin at 3:15. Students will be dismissed in one of the following ways:

Dismissal as a walker, with permission to walk off school grounds

  • These are students walking off of school grounds every day. Walkers will be dismissed by a staff member through the entry/exit way in the front of the school. Students are not allowed to walk out of the building to a parked car without an escort.

Dismissal as a pick-up

These are students being picked up every day. Pick-ups will be dismissed by staff members in the cafeteria. Students who are picked up every day do not need to be signed out since you have indicated to us that your child's normal dismissal will be as a pick-up. You will enter the cafeteria through the back entrance. You may park your car in the back on the upper-grade playground, if you'd like. A staff member will greet you at the door and you will be asked to wait in the back of the cafeteria towards the doors. Students will enter the cafeteria and report to a grade level table near the stage. The staff member will greet your child at the table, make eye contact with you and release the child to you. You may leave through the same doors you entered.

Dismissal as a bus rider

These are students who ride an assigned bus every day. Bus riders will be dismissed by staff members to their assigned buses.

Dismissal as an occasional pick-up

These are students being picked up outside of their normal routines. Occasional pick-ups will be dismissed by the secretary in the office. These students must be signed out to indicate there has been a change in their normal routine. They will be called by name to the office when walkers and pick-ups are dismissed.

Please send a note to school with your child if there is a change in the typical routine. Please refrain from calling the school to make transportation changes during the school day unless it is an emergency. Changes to dismissal will not occur without a note or email; we understand that emergencies may arise, but repeated changes become disruptive.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation. If you have any questions or need clarification, you may call the office at (860) 859-1800.

Regards,

Mrs. Mazzalupo

2019-2020 Teacher of the Year: Mohegan Reading Consultant, Lisa Zablonski

This morning, Will Klinefelter, Mayor McDaniel, MEA president Jenny Natale, Jen LeMay and I had the honor of recognizing Lisa Zablonski as Teacher of the Year at the Mohegan Read to Ride Celebration. Lisa has been a reading consultant at Mohegan for the last eleven years. She was nominated by her peers because she loves children, really makes a difference in students' learning, inspires children to achieve to the highest potential and ensures they feel pride in their accomplishments, works countless hours above and beyond the job, volunteers her time to work with students after school, mentors new teachers and shares her knowledge and expertise with all teachers, acts as a leader at the school, and is always learning and working to get better at her job. One teacher noted, "Lisa is always pleasant in demeanor, thoughtful in conversation, wise in direction, clever in problem solving, and reliable in EVERYTHING." Lisa exemplifies the traits of a truly excellent teacher and her expertise and work ethic are a tremendous benefit to our community.

2019-2020 Paraeducator of the Year: Last Thursday we recognized Tyl Paraeducator Donna Wilson. Mayor McDaniel, Bob, MJ, Jason, Jen and I had the pleasure of surprising Donna as she brought her reading students into the Tyl library where her husband and son also awaited her. A para in our district since 1987, Donna works closely with reading consultant Amy Geary to support students' growth as readers. Amy's nomination for Donna states: "With student achievement and safety being her utmost concern, Mrs. Wilson sets out to establish a good rapport with her students; and in return, they respond positively to her instructions. She is knowledgeable about reading and how to implement researched interventions that turn struggling readers into proficient readers. Her understanding of reading development makes her a vital member of the reading data team. She works collaboratively and respectfully with all staff. She has a "can-do" attitude. As such she accomplishes any task that is given to her. When unexpected situations arise, she is flexible and will do what needs to be done for the sake of the students and staff. Donna is an exemplary dedicated, paraprofessional who is worthy of this honor. Donna expressed "I just had to let you know how honored I feel to have been selected for Paraprofessional of the Year. I am well aware that there are many paras in this district who do an outstanding job, and I am humbled to have been chosen. I was so completely shocked that I'm sure I did not adequately express how thrilled and thankful I feel to have been given such recognition for working at a job I truly love. I am so very fortunate to be doing something that (most of the time!) doesn't feel like work. I honestly love coming to school each day. Thank you again for such an honor.'
