On Thursday, March 15th, Tyl Middle School honored our namesake, Leonard J. Tyl, with a school-wide 90th birthday party. Leonard J. Tyl is an extremely important person to our school community, and when we heard he was having a milestone birthday, we decided to celebrate with style. When he and his family entered the decorated and packed gymnasium to the music from the jazz band, the entire student body and staff greeted him with a standing ovation. After opening remarks from Mrs. Dix about how valued Mr. Tyl is to our school, Mr. Delaney presented a speech chronicling Mr. Tyl's career as an educator from teacher to superintendent of schools. Next, the jazz band and chamber choir performed, and, under the guiding hand of Mr. Petersen, some NJHS students displayed their video of, "A Day in the Life of a Tyl Middle School Student." Then, Mr. Tyl was presented with some gifts- handmade cards written by Tyl students, as well as a scrapbook created by Ms. Dragoo, commemorating the construction of the school. Finally, after closing remarks by Mr. Daly, the entire crowd regaled him with an enthusiastic round of "Happy Birthday!"
So, did the honored guest enjoy his birthday celebration? Here are some excerpts from his thank you email:
"I'm still riding on cloud 9. What a party!"
"Perhaps the program's closing was best of all when I received hugs, handshakes, best wishes and thanks from the students. I thought the line would never end."
"I thank everyone who helped Montville to grow and participated in any way in this party and celebration."
"I close wishing my personal thanks to all. You made my birthday a joy. I have one more request, if it's possible please pass this message on to the staff and students."
Message received, Mr. Tyl! We're glad you enjoyed yourself!
