2019-2020 Teacher of the Year: Mohegan Reading Consultant, Lisa Zablonski

This morning, Will Klinefelter, Mayor McDaniel, MEA president Jenny Natale, Jen LeMay and I had the honor of recognizing Lisa Zablonski as Teacher of the Year at the Mohegan Read to Ride Celebration. Lisa has been a reading consultant at Mohegan for the last eleven years. She was nominated by her peers because she loves children, really makes a difference in students' learning, inspires children to achieve to the highest potential and ensures they feel pride in their accomplishments, works countless hours above and beyond the job, volunteers her time to work with students after school, mentors new teachers and shares her knowledge and expertise with all teachers, acts as a leader at the school, and is always learning and working to get better at her job. One teacher noted, "Lisa is always pleasant in demeanor, thoughtful in conversation, wise in direction, clever in problem solving, and reliable in EVERYTHING." Lisa exemplifies the traits of a truly excellent teacher and her expertise and work ethic are a tremendous benefit to our community.

In an effort to uplift our community and end the year on a positive note, our school is running a two week Gratitude Campaign through the Look for the Good Project. This inspiring program began May 28, 2019 and will run for two weeks. All students and staff are participating and we would love for you to talk to your child about the project.

Starting on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, orange "Gratitude Spots" were placed in the hallways throughout the school to remind students and staff to think about what they are thankful for. If they step on one, they will think about what they are thankful for and share it out loud. Throughout the week, students will be writing their gratitude on sticky notes to create a beautiful "Gratitude Wall" of notes which are displayed in the main intersection of our hallways. Some classrooms will also be writing letters of gratitude to a special person in their lives.

To learn more about the science behind this program and how a humpback whale inspired thousands of kids to uplift their school communities with gratitude and kindness, please go online to lookforthegoodproject.org. We are so excited to roll out this campaign at Oakdale School.

2019-2020 Paraeducator of the Year: Last Thursday we recognized Tyl Paraeducator Donna Wilson. Mayor McDaniel, Bob, MJ, Jason, Jen and I had the pleasure of surprising Donna as she brought her reading students into the Tyl library where her husband and son also awaited her. A para in our district since 1987, Donna works closely with reading consultant Amy Geary to support students' growth as readers. Amy's nomination for Donna states: "With student achievement and safety being her utmost concern, Mrs. Wilson sets out to establish a good rapport with her students; and in return, they respond positively to her instructions. She is knowledgeable about reading and how to implement researched interventions that turn struggling readers into proficient readers. Her understanding of reading development makes her a vital member of the reading data team. She works collaboratively and respectfully with all staff. She has a "can-do" attitude. As such she accomplishes any task that is given to her. When unexpected situations arise, she is flexible and will do what needs to be done for the sake of the students and staff. Donna is an exemplary dedicated, paraprofessional who is worthy of this honor. Donna expressed "I just had to let you know how honored I feel to have been selected for Paraprofessional of the Year. I am well aware that there are many paras in this district who do an outstanding job, and I am humbled to have been chosen. I was so completely shocked that I'm sure I did not adequately express how thrilled and thankful I feel to have been given such recognition for working at a job I truly love. I am so very fortunate to be doing something that (most of the time!) doesn't feel like work. I honestly love coming to school each day. Thank you again for such an honor.'
