In an effort to uplift our community and end the year on a positive note, our school is running a two week Gratitude Campaign through the Look for the Good Project. This inspiring program began May 28, 2019 and will run for two weeks. All students and staff are participating and we would love for you to talk to your child about the project.

Starting on Tuesday, May 28, 2019, orange “Gratitude Spots” were placed in the hallways throughout the school to remind students and staff to think about what they are thankful for. If they step on one, they will think about what they are thankful for and share it out loud. Throughout the week, students will be writing their gratitude on sticky notes to create a beautiful “Gratitude Wall” of notes which are displayed in the main intersection of our hallways. Some classrooms will also be writing letters of gratitude to a special person in their lives.

To learn more about the science behind this program and how a humpback whale inspired thousands of kids to uplift their school communities with gratitude and kindness, please go online to lookforthegoodproject.org. We are so excited to roll out this campaign at Oakdale School.

  • As the cold weather approaches and we enter the cold/flu season it is important to understand the policy regarding illness. A student with a fever of 100 degrees or greater is to remain at home until he/she has been 24 hours FREE of fever. Temperature must be within normal limits without the use of medication.
  • Also, please take a moment to review the attached policy regarding authorization of medication to students in school. It is important to note, that in addition to prescribed medications, many over the counter medications are included in the medication policy.

Smiles on the Move Program Forms were sent home offering preventative dental services right here at school. This program is sponsored by UCFS. Please review the form and send it back if you would like to take advantage of this service. We need 15 participants for the program to come to Oakdale School.

The following information can be found on the UCFS website:

UCFS is pleased to offer preventive dental services in the school setting to children enrolled in the following cities and towns: Colchester, Franklin, Griswold, Groton, Lebanon, Ledyard, Lisbon, Montville, Norwich, Preston, Sprague and Voluntown.

Each child will receive an exam, cleaning and fluoride treatment. Sealants and dental x-rays are performed as needed. Children also learn proper brushing and flossing techniques.

All children are eligible to receive dental treatment. For children with no dental insurance, the cost for the above services provided in the school is $40. Sealants are an additional charge of $30 per tooth. The service is 100% covered (no charge) for children insured by HUSKY or Medicaid. UCFS accepts most insurance plans. Coverage and costs for these plans depends upon your insurance coverage.

The School Store will open for business this Friday. Students may visit the school store before class begins on Fridays.

Lunch Visits: Please make arrangements ahead of time with the office if you plan to visit your child during lunch. You can email both secretaries at: oakdaleoffice2@montvilleschools.org when visiting a student for lunch in the cafeteria. The visitor will be issued a sticker with “lunch visit” displayed for staff to see. We also ask that visitors do not attend recess with students. We value recess as a time for students to be with their peers to develop appropriate social interaction skills. Once lunch is over visitors can sign out in the office. Parents/visitors should not leave the cafeteria unless they have signed in after lunch for volunteering or have a prearranged visit/appointment scheduled in another location of the school. Staff members will alert the office if they have arranged for a volunteer. Please feel free to visit the district’s website (www.montvilleschools.org) for further information regarding policies on school visitors.

Just a reminder that school hours for elementary schools changed this year to 8:45 – 3:20. Student drop-off begins at 8:30 and dismissal is promptly at 3:20. Students should not be picked up later than 3:20. If an emergency arises and you are going to be late, please contact the office. Dismissal time is a very busy time, please make sure to communicate any dismissal changes in the form of a note or email at the start of the day. In the rare event that dismissal plans change during the school day, please make every effort to call the school prior to noon so we can communicate these changes with your child and his/her teachers.

09.05.18 Message from the Principal

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year. This is our first edition of the weekly electronic newsletter, which is sent home on Wednesdays. In the welcome back letter sent to families over the summer a number of new staff members were introduced. It is my pleasure to also welcome our new School Psychologist, Mrs. Di Garbo, to Oakdale School. She had been a School Psychologist in Montville in the past and is excited to be returning. Here is some important information:

Open House: Wed., 9/12, 5:15-6:15 p.m. Students are welcome to attend with their families to give a tour of the school and a visit to the classroom.

 Our morning arrival and afternoon dismissal is now being supervised by teachers (it had previously been supervised by monitors). This is a new responsibility for many of our staff members and they are diligently learning procedures in these first few weeks. There is one item I would like to address in regards to parent drop-off in the morning. For safety reasons, we ask that students only exit from the passenger side of the vehicle during Morning Arrival. If you are unable to drop off from the passenger side we ask that you park your car and walk your child to the front of the building. Adults should not be getting out of the car to let students out of the driver side of the car as it holds up the flow of traffic and poses a safety risk as students walk between cars. We appreciate your cooperation with this procedure.

Summer Reading Logs are due to the classroom teacher by Friday, September 7th.

PTO News We can’t wait to see you all at the Open House! Come by the PTO table in the cafeteria on your way out to see what the PTO does for the school and how you can help us. We are collecting Box Tops again this year so feel free to send them in to the school with your kids anytime. Our first PTO meeting will be Wednesday, September 19th , from 6:30-7:30, and we would love for you to check us out. Stay tuned soon for more information regarding Fall Fitness Day, which is the largest fundraiser of the school year where 100% of the money raised goes to the school.
