Absences

When a student is absent, a parent or guardian should call to inform the school regarding the absence. An attendance answering machine is available for your message when the school office is closed. In addition, a student who is absent must have a written excuse from home upon his/her return to school. The student must present this excuse to the homeroom teacher on the day he/she returns regardless of any phone contact with school. It is the student's responsibility to make up any work missed during an absence from school.

When any student has been ill or expects to be absent for three days or more, he/she may obtain assignments by telephoning the school office. These assignments can generally be picked up by noon of the next day.

It is the school's policy to make every effort to contact home whenever a student is absent.

Accidents and Illness

A student should report to his/her teacher if he/she becomes ill during the day, or if he/she has an accident while in the building or on school grounds. The teacher will then refer the student to the nurse and school office. Students must see the nurse for assistance in health matters prior to contacting home.

Attendance

In order to take full advantage of all that Tyl Middle School has to offer, students should make every effort to be in school each day. Good attendance is a major contributor to academic success. We at Tyl, therefore, work closely with the home to monitor student attendance.

Any student who is absent 10 days will meet with his/her school counselor to discuss the importance of good attendance.

Any student who is absent 15 days will take part in a conference with the school administration, his/her school counselor, and his/her parent or guardian.

Board of Education Policy 025:

Any student who is absent 28 days in one year will be automatically assigned to summer school. He/she will be considered for promotion only after having successfully completed summer school.

Any student who is absent 45 days in one school year and has not been previously retained shall be retained.

Any student who is absent 56 days in two successive school years and has not been previously retained shall be retained.

These actions are subject to appeal in accordance with the Board of Education Policy 025.

Homework and Study

Homework at the Tyl Middle School is considered a key ingredient in the overall learning process. It is designed as an extension of classroom work to help students become more adept with material presently being studied. Homework also promotes a greater degree of self-directed and independent learning.

All Students at the Tyl Middle School should be spending between one and two hours nightly on teacher-directed assignments. If no formal assignments are given, the same amount of time should be spent reviewing previously presented work in each of the student's academic areas.

Students at the Tyl Middle School will have experience working on long term projects, preparing for tests, and reading assignments. These tasks should be considered as homework and may entail completing assignments over a weekend or holiday period. Students, therefore, must learn to budget their time and establish priorities. All students should keep a daily assignment log identifying their exact assignments. It should be noted to both parents and students alike that one of the greatest sources of academic failure at Tyl Middle School is the non-completion of homework assignments.

Parents are encouraged to contact their child's school counselor if they have any questions dealing with their child's general work habits as they relate to homework.

Homework requests will be processed for students who have been absent from school due to illness for a period of three days or more. When a students returns to school, the student should consult with each teacher regarding make-up work, deadlines, and times of after school extra help.

School Phones

Located in the entry foyer outside the auditorium is a pay phone which may be used by students. School Insurance

Early in the school year each student will receive an application blank and a pamphlet describing the accident insurance policy available to children at this school. Parents are urged to read the policy carefully with their child and to purchase the plan best suited to their needs. This is the only way to insure financial coverage for routine accidents when non school negligence exists.

The school carries a policy concerning only approved sports and related activities. Students participating in approved activities are covered by this policy only while they are actually taking part in the activity. A physical examination and/or doctor's permission is required before a student may participate in a sport or related activities. Parents must submit to the school nurse a written report of the findings of their physician. The policy does not cover students while traveling to and from school.
