Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the disciplinary rules at Tyl Middle School is to establish a safe learning environment through the development of mutual respect for the students, the staff, and the school. Tyl Middle School will provide a quality education in a structured program in which positive reinformcement is coupled with the consistency of consequences. Our underlying premise is that school in order to maintain a safe environment for children. Therefore, all students are expected to follow the fundamental eight rules listed below. These rules apply to any school activity. In addition, these rules will be posted throughout the school.

Dress

Students should be clean and neatly dressed in order to maintain a safe and proper educational environment. Often student behavior and performance has a direct relatiohsip to the type of clothing being worn. The dress code below will be enforced by all members of the Tyl faculty.

1. Clothing which is immodest because off its tight fit or revealing nature is prohibited.

2. Clothing and accessories shall not display letters, words, or pictures which reference any of the following: a) drugs or alcohol, b) sex or sexual behavior, c) profance language or gestures, d) slogans, names, titles, or the like which are defamatory.

3. Black soled footwear which makrt the floor should not be worn.

4. Flip flops or thong sandals should not be worn.

5. Jackets, coats and windbreakers normally worn as outdoorwear whould not be worn in school.

6. Hats or caps should not be worn in school.

7. Length of skirts or shorts shouldbe at least mid-thigh.

8. Tank tops, shirts with straps, short shirts, see through or mesh-style shirts or blouses should not be worn.

9. Underwear worn as outerwear is not permitted.

On an initial violation of the dress code, parents will be notified and requested to bring a change of clothing for their child if necessary. Subsequent violations will result in Saturday detention and/or In-School Suspension.

 Eight School Rules

Respect Begets Safety

1. Everyone will sh ow respect for the school its people, its property, and its purpose so that the learning environment is not jeopardized. Students will remove head coverings upon entering the building.

2. Students will follow directions the first time when given by an adult.

3. No cursing or obscene gestures are permitted.

4. Students will behave quietly in the hallways, walking to the right, and moving directly to their assigned areas. Signed passes are required.

5. Students will not run, fight, push, or "play fight."

6. Students will arrive to class on time, will come prepared, (i.e.: with pencil, book covered, homework completed, etc....), will be willing to participate, and cheating will not be tolerated.

7. No one will chew gum or eat candy anywhere in the school. Consumption of ood or beverages will be in designated areas only; or elsewhere with special administrative permission.

8. Toys and electronic equipment are not allowed in the building.

A detailed infractions and consequences document will be sent home at the start of the school year. This document references the three levels of discipline: Level I, teacher directed; Level II, administrative; and Level III, zero tolerance.

Evening Programs

Students must be accompanied by a parent or designee in order to attend evening programs as audience members.

Substance Abuse Policy

It is the policy of the Montville Board of Education to prevent and prohibit the possession, use and distribution of any drug or drug paraphernalia, alchohol or tobacco products on school property, at school sponsored events, on school buses and enroute to and from school by any mode of travel provided by the school system. Violations of this policy will result in suspension from school, and may result in an expulsion hearing before the Board of Educaiton and legal action. Activities of a questionable nature that mimic or simulate drug use, possession, or distribution are similarly of serious concern and will be treated in the same manner as any substance abuse issue. Smoking is prohibited on all Montville school properties.

Suspension

When infractions of school rules, regulations, or procedures are considered serious and/or severe, suspension from school will result. Some reasons for suspension are insubordination, fighting, destruction of school property, truancy, and tobacco/alcohol/drug violations.

Once a student has committed four in-school suspension offenses, the student will be assigned to out-of-school suspension for further infractions. In addition, a parent conference will be required.

Note: Any weapons violation is a cause for expulsion from school and police action. (Toy and/or facsimile weapons are considered as weapons under this policy.)

Appeal of school discipline may be made to the Assistant Principal or Principal.

Tardiness to Class

A student arriving to class must have a pass from the teacher that detained him/her. Failure to have a pass when late can result in a teacher detention being issued.

Students who are repeatedly tardy will be reported to the Assistant Principal.
