    <title>Full Day Kindergarten Approved</title>

    <description>&lt;p&gt;The Board of Education approved at its regular Board meeting on Tuesday, February 14, a full day kindergarten program.&amp;nbsp; The Board vote was unanimous.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

    <title>Kindergarten Registration, Week of February 13, 2012</title>

    <description>&lt;p&gt;Forms for registration, physical examination, and health forms are available at any one of the three elementary schools during the school day (8:45-3:00, M-F).&amp;nbsp; &lt;strong&gt;Parents are requested to pick up these forms the week of February 13, 2012 complete them, and return them to the school no later than March 9, 2012.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Please be aware that the determination of the school your child will attend is made later this school year.&amp;nbsp; The school at which you register may not be the school your child will be attending.&lt;/p&gt;</description>

    <title>Kindergarten Registration Requirements for Children Entering Kindergarten in September 2012</title>

    <description>&lt;p&gt;The Office of the Superintendent is announcing registration requirements for children entering kindergarten in September&amp;nbsp;2012.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;To be eligible for kindergarten, the following documentation is required at the time of registration:&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;1.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Birth Certificate or Baptismal Record.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;2.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; Physical Examination Form (blue) completed and signed by your child&#039;s doctor, dated within 12 months of the date of entry into school.&amp;nbsp; &lt;strong&gt;Parents must also complete page 1 of this form.&lt;/strong&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;3.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;span style=&quot;text-decoration: underline;&quot;&gt;Proof of immunization requirements&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&lt;strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; &lt;/strong&gt;a.&amp;nbsp;&lt;strong&gt; DTaP/Td&lt;/strong&gt; - minimum of four (4) doses of diphtheria, pertussis, and tetanus – for children aged 48 months and older, the last dose must be given on or after the fourth birthday;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; b.&lt;strong&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; MMR&lt;/strong&gt; - measles, mumps and rubella.&amp;nbsp; Two (2) doses given at least twenty-eight (28) days apart, the first given on or after the first birthday;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; c.&amp;nbsp; &lt;strong&gt;HIB&lt;/strong&gt; - Hemophilus influenzae, type B (given on or after the first birthday).&amp;nbsp; This vaccine is only for children entering school who have not reached their fifth (5th) birthday by the opening day of school.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;d.&amp;nbsp; &lt;strong&gt;Hepatitis A –&lt;/strong&gt; Two (2) doses given six (6) months apart, the first dose on or after the first birthday.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; e.&amp;nbsp; &lt;strong&gt;HBV&lt;/strong&gt; - Hepatitis B.&amp;nbsp; An individual shall be considered adequately protected against hepatitis B if the individual is enrolled in preschool through grade 12 and was immunized with three (3) doses of hepatitis B vaccine as follows:&amp;nbsp; two (2) doses given at least four (4) weeks apart followed by a third dose at least sixteen (16) weeks after the first dose and at least eight (8) weeks after the second dose, and the third dose shall be given no earlier than twenty-four (24) weeks of age;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; f.&amp;nbsp; &lt;strong&gt;Varicella (Chicken Pox)&lt;/strong&gt; - Immunized with two (2) doses of varicella vaccine given three (3) months apart; the first given on or after the first birthday.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; g.&amp;nbsp; &lt;strong&gt;PCV&lt;/strong&gt; - Pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (given on or after the first birthday).&amp;nbsp; This vaccine is only for children entering school who have not reached their fifth (5th) birthday by the opening of school.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; h.&amp;nbsp; &lt;strong&gt;TOPV/IPV&lt;/strong&gt; - minimum of three (3) doses of polio vaccine – for children aged 48 months and older, the last dose must be given on or after the fourth birthday.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;4.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp; A child is considered adequately protected against measles, rubella, mumps, varicella, Hepatitis A and B if he/she has it confirmed in writing by a physician based on a specific blood test conducted by a certified laboratory.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;By law, children who do not meet state immunization and physical examination requirements must be excluded from school until the requirements are met.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Board of Education policy requires a pre-school physical examination one (1) year prior to entering school in September.&amp;nbsp; The physical should be conducted any time after September 1 of the previous year.&lt;/p&gt;

    <title>Teacher of the Year</title>

    <description>&lt;p&gt;Heather Holmes, Grade 2 Teacher at Dr. Charles E. Murphy School, has been named the 2012 Montville Teacher of the Year.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Heather began her teaching career in 1993 as a Preschool teacher at Sacred Heart School in Groton, and came to Montville in September 1999 as a Kindergarten teacher at Dr. Charles E. Murphy School.&amp;nbsp; She taught kindergarten for one year and has been teaching second grade for the past 11 years.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Heather received her Bachelor of Arts in English Degree from Eastern Connecticut State University in 1992, and in 1999 she received her Masters in the Art of Teaching Degree and her Elementary Certification.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Heather is a model educator who demonstrates daily what every teacher should be implementing instructionally.&amp;nbsp; She connects with children in such a manner that always encourages and builds self-esteem within her students.&amp;nbsp; The connection she makes is phenomenal.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Heather involves herself in a number of professional development opportunities.&amp;nbsp; She has been part of a cohort group of teachers that were training in Project EXCEL, which supports English Language Learners, and she led the development of a project board which displayed all of the activities that were used with students during the course of her training. &amp;nbsp;She is willing to take risks in implement new and creative lessons with her students, always striving to become a better teacher.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;In 1999, Heather received the Elementary School Exemplary Program Award from the Connecticut Association of Schools.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Heather served for three years on the School Improvement Team for her own children&#039;s elementary school, and has volunteered in her community for many activities.&amp;nbsp; She was involved for many years in a project called, &quot;Pennies for Pets,&quot; donating funds to her local Humane Society.&amp;nbsp; At Murphy School, she has participated in the &quot;Care and Share Food Drive&quot; and has been a member of the &quot;Relay for Life Team.&quot;&amp;nbsp; One exciting project that she initiated with her class was to make baby quilts that were donated to the L&amp;amp;M Hospital NICU Department and given to premature babies.&amp;nbsp; The largest quilt made with student drawings is still on display in a glass case outside the NICU door at L&amp;amp;M Hospital.&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p&gt;Heather embodies the core values of rigor with her passion and enthusiasm and her belief in the potential of young children.&amp;nbsp; She continually strives to challenge students and provide them with a solid foundation of academics as well as building a strong character within all her students.&amp;nbsp; Heather truly cares about making a difference in the lives of children.&lt;/p&gt;</description>
