The school system conducts screenings of three-year-old resident children each month at Oakdale School. Using information from the annual school census, invitations are mailed to parents and children in the month of the child's birthday.
Children participate in play activities which focus on fine and gross motor, language, social, and readiness (for learning) skills. Parents are asked to complete a questionnaire on their child's development and interests and are given the opportunity to discuss their child's performance after the screening is completed. Children also participate in a small birthday celebration which includes singing and sharing of cake.
This process aids school personnel in identifying children with special education needs at an earlier age. It is also an opportunity for parents to gather information about their preschool children and how they can continue to help them to learn.
Parents of children who do not receive an invitation during the month of their child's third birthday and who are interested in having their child screened should call the school office at Palmer Memorial School (848-7816). Those who do receive an invitation are encouraged to respond positively and to call if they have any questions.
