Physical Education Today

Physical education plays a vital and indispensable role in our schools today. Its purpose is to prepare students for a lifetime of fitness, physical activity, and personal growth. Despite its importance, the need for more frequent and quality physical education is unmistakable in a society where obesity, sedentary living, and diseases of lifestyle are increasingly prevalent.

Thankfully, physical education is entering a "new era." The days of rolling out the ball are past, replaced by a dynamic and effective program including movement education K-3, skill themes 4-5, sport education, 6-8, and elective based lifetime activities 9-12. Throughout the curriculum, learning builds upon itself as teachers craft engaging, diverse, developmentally appropriate, student centered, standard-based, and success-oriented lessons.

Fitness will play an increasingly vital role as it is infused throughout the curriculum emphasizing both psychomotor and cognitive objectives. Assessment will become an integral part of every unit to guide instruction, quantify learning, and help justify our place in the school community. The affective domain, long a backseat objective, will hold prominence in every unit helping students support one another and build character. Technology will become more ubiquitous in the classroom thus helping students acclimate to health-related technology, assess current fitness levels, and speed learning.
