Academic Decathlon

The Academic Decathlon team is a nine-member team that competes in ten different academic categories ranging from art history to anatomy, and music to economics. They meet weekly studying a different thematic unit each year in preparation for the state championships on the UCONN campus in March.
 
Art Club
Advisor: Mrs. Fain Room 306
The Art Club meets weekly to create work in different media and exchange ideas. The club hosted professional artists and professors from art schools. Club members held a student and faculty art show in the spring and helped the National Honor Society on a Mural project at Murphy Elementary School.
 
Bible Club
Advisor: Mrs. Baril
Room 316
The MHS student-led Bible Study started off its second year examining the book of John in the New Testament. A core group of curious, faithful students share their faith at weekly meetings. They read and discuss the Bible, spend time in prayer, and bring their own experiences with them to benefit the group.
 
Biking Club
Advisor: Mrs. Yush

The Biking Club is designed to increase fitness through mountain biking at local trails and state parks with a few eekend day trips planned to races or recreational mountain trail riding in New England. Students must have working mountain bike, helmet, and parent permission form.
 
Chess and Card Club

The purpose of the Chess and Card Club is to become more informed about these games, to play and teach others to play, and to learn gamesmanship.
 
Culinary Club/FCCLA
Advisor: Dr. Greenstein

Life Management Department
The Culinary Club’s purpose is to expand leadership potential and develop life skills necessary in families, communities and the workplace. The culinary club prepares food as a service for school and community activities including open houses, meetings, and special events. Their goal is learning and growing through service to others.
 
Drama/Thespian Troupe
Advisor: Mrs. Olynciw
Music Office
Students who participate in drama productions are awarded points for quality work. Upon receiving 10 or more points and having participated in two productions, students become eligible for inductions into Thespian Troupe #3083, the MHS affiliate of the International Thespian Society. The Society is dedicated to the advancement of drama among high school students throughout the world. This year we presented “An evening of One-Act Plays” and “Damn Yankees.”
 

FBLA

School-Career Office

FBLA is made up of students who are interested in business or business related fields. Their mission is to encourage and promote a partnership with local businesses while giving MHS students hands on experience in the field. The organization has attended numerous leadership conferences and state competitions as well as made a presence at Career Expos and Chamber of Commerce meetings. The club has served the community by raising money for March of Dimes, giving Christmas gifts to less fortunate children, participating in Read across America, and offering free baby sitting services to faculty. This year members hope to attend the National Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee.
 
GSA/ Gay Straight Alliance

The Montville High School Gay/Straight Alliance is dedicated to promoting equal opportunity and treatment for the entire school population. They are committed to the practices of tolerance and diversity among all peoples. This year, the MHS-GSA is networking with area high school GSAs and we will participate in the annual True Colors Conference. Membership is open to all students and staff at MHS. Parent and community participation is also welcome.

This group produces a literary magazine that encourages writing and drawing from all students and faculty. Students organize, arrange and design and the magazine. Images has been recognized and ranked “Excellent” by the National Council of teachers for the past three years.
 
Math Team
Advisor: Mr. Kopij
Room 107
The math team at MHS competes against 12 other schools in New London County. Students have an opportunity to compete individually at each meet by participating in three out of five rounds and they compete together in a final round called a team round. In April trophies are given to the top 3 schools and five individual trophies are given to the top 5 scorers in the league. Schools that finish in the upper half of their league go on to compete at the state meet.
 

National Honor Society
Advisor: Ms. Marino

The Montville chapter of the National Honor Society recognizes those students who have excelled in academics, leadership, character and service. Juniors and seniors who have been selected for the NHS are inducted in a ceremony each May. The NHS strives to create a positive school environment and to promote school spirit by organizing service projects, providing peer tutoring, assisting members of the school faculty, and assuming leadership roles in our school community.
 
Outing/Ski Club
Advisor: Mr. Marelli

The Outing Club takes trips and plans activities for the outdoors. All students are welcome regardless of skill level. Skiing is the most popular activity and the club participates in approximately 3-4 ski trips a year.
 
Peer Mediation
Advisors: Mr. Contos & Mr. Douglas
Counseling Office
The Peer Mediation Team is composed of a dedicated group of student volunteers who are committed to helping reduce the frequency and severity of conflicts which arise between students at MHS. The mediators have been thoroughly trained in a three day workshop. The mediators skillfully guide their disputing peers through a process involving self-reflection, active listening, risk taking and compromise to reach an agreement in which both parties sign a contract to uphold.
 
Poetry Club
Advisor: Ms. Halsey

The Poetry Club meets Bi-weekly to read, write, share and inspire fellow readers and lovers of poetry. Everyone is welcome.
 

Rifle Club

The Montville High School Rifle Club was formed to teach firearms safety and train students in the Olympic sport of competitive rifle marksmanship. The club meets twice weekly at the Quaker Hill Rod and Gun Club and competes against other schools in a statewide league.
 
TSA
(Technology Students Association)

Technology Department
TSA is the only student organization devoted exclusively to the needs of technology and is open to all interested students who have had or are taking any technology courses. Students apply their knowledge develop leadership skills while they participate in TE experiences, State National Competitions and School Community service projects.
 
Tri-M Music Honor Society
Advisor: Ms. Marino
Band Office
The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for high school students and is a program of MENC: The National Association for Music Education. It is designed to recognize students for their academic and musical achievements, reward them for their accomplishments and service activities, and to inspire other students to excel at music and leadership. Juniors and seniors are nominated to perform in an auditioned recital, and selected students are inducted at a ceremony held in the fall.
 
Yearbook
Advisor: Mr. Blanchette

Technology Department
The yearbook club provides students with an opportunity to get involved with the editing and layout of the yearbook. Students learn photography, layout, advertising and the publishing skills associated with desktop publishing and graphic design. This club is open to all students.
 
YES Club
(Young Educators Society)

Advisor: Mrs. O’Neill

The YES Club is designed for students who are interested in learning about what teachers do. Club members go on field trips to colleges, universities, and other schools, and participate in the statewide Future Educators of America convention and inter-district pod discussions about current educational issues. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet other prospective teachers, learn about teaching and open doors in the profession.
