Scholarships for Service
Deadline: May 10, 2010

Scholarship For Service (SFS) is a unique program designed to increase and strengthen the cadre of federal information assurance professionals that protect the government's critical information infrastructure.

This program provides scholarships that fully fund the typical costs that students pay for books, tuition, and room and board while attending an approved institution of higher learning.

Additionally, participants receive stipends of up to $8,000 for undergraduate and $12,000 for graduate students. While still in school, students funded for more than a year will also serve a paid internship at a Federal agency.

The agency may offer students other paid employment while they are on scholarship provided it does not interfere with their studies. In exchange for the scholarship (including the stipend), students agree to work for the Federal Government for a period equivalent to the length of the scholarship or one year, whichever is longer.

The generous nature of the SFS program makes the Federal Government the employer of choice for students planning to pursue a career in the field of information assurance. (Office of Personnel Management) http://www.sfs.opm.gov/

Presidential Freedom Scholarships
Deadline: May 12, 2006

The Presidential Freedom Scholarships promote student service and civic engagement. These scholarships, funded in part by the Corporation for National and Community Service, a federal agency, recognize high school students for outstanding leadership in service to their community and neighbors.

High school students across the nation are solving the problems in their communities, demonstrating compassion for others, and servicing those who need support. The President has called upon Americans to serve their communities and the nation. Many students have answered that call to service. Outstanding high school students are eligible for recognition through a Presidential Freedom Scholarship.

Each student selected to receive this scholarship is awarded at least $1,000. The Corporation for National and Community Service provides $500 to students selected by their high school, and a local organization or an individual provides the matching funds of at least $500.

We require local matching funds to encourage strong partnerships between schools and the surrounding communities. The matching requirement recognizes that the student has been honored at the school level and the community level, and therefore should be recognized on a national level. In the past, high schools, community foundations, businesses, and civic organizations, as well as other groups and individuals, have provided matching funds.

Please click here (https://www.studentservicescholarship.org/)to apply online or click here to download a printable version (http://www.learnandserve.org/pdf/2006_pfs_application.pdf) of the 2006 certification form.

Humane Society Of The United States
Shaw-Worth Memorial Scholarship
Deadline: 5/15 Annually

Each year the scholarship is awarded to a New England high school senior who has made a meaningful contribution to animal protection over a significant period of time. The award consists of tuition assistance in the amount of $2,000.00, which is payable to the college of the recipient's choice. Eligible applicants are sought from New England public, private, parochial, and vocational schools.

Actions meriting the award may include long-term, direct work on behalf of animals; inspiring leadership in animal protection organizations; papers, speeches, or presentations on humane topics; or heroic rescues of animals in danger. A humane attitude, understanding of humane ethics and past performance on behalf of animals are essential. A passive liking for animals or the mere desire to enter an animal care field does not justify the award. High scholastic standing is not a requisite for this scholarship; please do not include academic transcript in the application. Financial need is also not a consideration.

Applications may be submitted by any Class of 2008 high school senior to The Humane Society of the United States, New England Regional Office, PO Box 619, Jacksonville, Vermont 05342, postmarked by March 15, 2008. There is no standardized application form to complete.

Applications should be written in letter form and should include a narrative of the student’s achievements in animal protection, as well as a discussion of his or her attitude toward animals. Documentation of the activities cited, recommendations from at least three people, and a description of future plans for humane work are required. Supporting letters from teachers, mentors, supervisor, peers and other observers are also helpful. In addition, applications should include the student’s home address and phone number.

If you would like more information about the Shaw-Worth Memorial Scholarship, please contact the HSUS New England Regional Office at (802) 368-2790 or via e-mail at nero@hsus.org | http://www.hsus.org/

Student Advisory Council on Education (SSACE)
The Connecticut Association of Schools
Any interested student MUST see Dr. Phillips by Friday, May 16, 2008

MHS is invited to nominate a student to be considered for service as a member of the State Student Advisory council on Education (SSACE). The Council gives Connecticut students a voice in education planning and enables the State Board of Education, the Commissioner of Education, State Department of Education personnel, the Governor, and the state legislators to become familiar with high school students' perspectives on key issues.

SSACE meets regularly with the Commissioner of Education, and on occasion with the Governor, to reflect student opinion in areas of concern in the high schools. The Council meets seven times per year. Members write position papers on important topics in education, conduct the statewide Challenge to Educational Citizenship Awards program, and through their decisions and activities learn from each other about citizenship, leadership, and responsibility.

Meetings take place on school days from 9:30 AM to 12:15 PM at the State Department of Education in Hartford . The student nominated, in addition to being capable of thoughtful expression within a group, needs to be able to miss up to seven school days and provide his or her own transportation to and from Hartford .

MHS is invited to nominate one student from our school who we think is up to this task. This does not have to be the top-ranked student or president of an important organization. It does have to be a dependable person of good character capable of giving wise counsel to key educational decision-makers.

Any interested student MUST see Dr. Phillips by Friday, May 16.
