Essay Contest Guidelines:

The Institute for the Study of Secularism in Society and Culture (ISSSC) was established at Trinity College, Hartford, in 2005 to advance understanding of the role of secular values and the process of secularization in contemporary society and culture.

Nonpartisan and multidisciplinary, the Institute conducts academic research, sponsors curriculum development, and presents public events.

As part of the Institute’s curriculum development project, the current academic year is dedicated to the theme, Secular Traditions and the Foundations of the Natural Sciences.

In this context, the Institute organizes an essay contest for high school students in the State of Connecticut.

The essay topic is:

  • Science and technology are an increasingly important aspect of our lifestyle today. Therefore, one might expect that the public’s desire for a better understanding of science and its achievements should rise
accordingly. However, there is evidence that there is no increase in the desire to study science at school or college.
  • Why, in your view, do so many young Americans today show little interest in science education?
  • Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples based on your reading, studies, and personal experience.

Eligibility:

  • All students enrolled in grades 9-12 in public, private and home schools.
  • Students must submit original work and have a sponsoring teacher sign the contest Registration Form.
  • Contestants may submit only one essay.
  • Contestants must compose an original essay with limited guidance from others.
  • The Sponsors will have the right to edit, publish or otherwise duplicate any essay entered into the contest without payment to the author.
  • Each contestant must complete the Registration Form.
  • Essays must be printed in 12 font Times New Roman characters, and doublespaced.
  • Any quotations or copyrighted material used in the essay must be identified properly. Failure to identify non-original material will result in disqualification.
  • Essays must be written in English.
  • The decision of the contest committee is final, and no higher appeals will be recognized.
  • There is no cost to enter the contest.

Format:
The essay should be 1000-1200 words and must include a separate Registration Form.

Send all entries to:
Dr. Michael Ben-Chaim, Essay Contest Secretary,
ISSSC, Trinity College, 300 Summit Street, Hartford, CT 06106.

Scholarship Program

Scholar program

HP Scholars is a U.S. program designed to encourage African American, Latino and American Indian students to complete degrees in technical fields.

Nearly 120 engineering and computer science students from partner schools, including Morgan State University, North Carolina A & T University, University of California, Los Angeles and San Jose State University, were HP Scholars in 2003. They received $40,000 scholarship packages, including cash, HP internships and HP equipment. Scholarships are awarded to a select group of high-school seniors who have elected to pursue engineering studies at the university level.

These grants are renewable each year for students who stay in engineering and meet minimal academic standards.

HP Scholars are also offered paid summer internships at HP during the three summers between their engineering studies. Each HP Scholar is matched with an e-mail mentor who helps them prepare a resume, get ready for interviews and prepare for their summer internship experience.

Learn more on our HP Scholars website.

The HP Scholar Award is a scholarship opportunity for students interested in engineering. The total value of the four-year cash scholarship, HP Scholar Productivity Package and the three paid internships will exceed $40,000 per student. Scholarship awards are $12,000 ($3000 per year for four years) and are intended to help defray educational expenses. Upon acceptance into the program, each HP Scholar receives a Productivity Package which includes an HP laptop, printer, and PDA. The most valuable part of the HP Scholar experience is the internship opportunity. HP Scholars are eligible for three paid summer internships with HP at one of our US locations during the course of their undergraduate work.

The HP Scholar program offers scholarship opportunities to underrepresented minority (African American, Latino, or American Indian) students who will pursue a bachelor of science degree in computer science, computer engineering or electrical engineering at an HP Scholar partnership university. High school seniors and community college transfer that are preparing to attend one of our partnership universities are invited to apply for this scholarship prior to enrollment at the university.

Youth Harbor
Nana Fund Scholarship
Deadline: March 15

Youth Harbor , a local children’s charity, is thrilled to announce our brand new scholarship program, The “Nana” Fund, available to young people who demonstrate outstanding dedication to improving their lives and the lives of others.

This program was named after and inspired by our founder’s Norwegian Grandmother who believed that every child should go to college and work to further their education in order to better their lives and ultimately improve society as a result.

“I can remember talking to my Nana about what I wanted to be when I grew up at an early age,” states Kaaren Schultz, one of the founders of Youth Harbor . “Being the oldest of the grandchildren, I was out of college already when she was still encouraging my younger cousins to reach for the stars. This Christmas, my husband and I received the best gift from her when she made a $25 donation to our charity! We were so touched by her generosity and support that we decided to start this scholarship fund with that donation and make it something that she would be proud to know that she inspired.”

The scholarship will be available to students that have exemplified unselfish service to mankind and have made a positive impact on their own communities. Application forms and instructions are available by contacting the Youth Harbor office, 704-372-2363, or online at www.youthharbor.org.
