Boston University
Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship

Deadline: December 1, Annually

The Boston University Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship will be awarded for the first time in 2006. The scholarship is designed to recognize students with strong math and science backgrounds who have the potential to thrive at Boston University’s College of Engineering, a vibrant community of students, faculty, and staff dedicated to educating the engineers of tomorrow and advancing the frontiers of science and technology through research and discovery. Alexander Graham Bell Scholars receive renewable scholarships for full tuition and are guaranteed admission to a Boston University Engineering master’s degree program, provided a 3.40 grade point average is earned during the Bachelor of Science program. Students will also receive one semester of funding in their first two years of study to participate in a research program with a College of Engineering faculty member.

Only students who have applied and are accepted for admission to the Boston University College of Engineering will be considered for this award. The application is available at http://www.bu.edu/admissions/apply/scholarship.html. Each candidate must also submit a 500-word essay responding to the following:

Write an essay about an engineering advance or innovation that you feel has had an important impact on society. Your essay should describe the advance/innovation and discuss its implications for society and the field of engineering.

Please submit your essay electronically to engessay@bu.edu as an attached Microsoft Word document. For identification purposes, please include your name and Social Security number or birth date. All candidates must submit an application for undergraduate admission, supplemental essay, and results of the SAT and two SAT Subject Tests or the ACT (with Writing Test), by December 1.

Applicants must indicate that they are Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship applicants on their applications. Students should apply electronically using either the Boston University online application or the Common Application with the Boston University Supplement. Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship candidates using the Boston University online application should go to the box at the bottom of the first page of the application marked “Office Use Only” and type the letters “EN.” Candidates using the Common Application should indicate that they are Alexander Graham Bell Scholarship applicants by typing “EN” in the “Office Use Only” box at the bottom of the Boston University Common Application Supplement.

Please note that students planning to take the SAT are required to take the new test with the writing section, which was administered for the first time in March 2006. Results of previous administrations of the SAT will not meet the standardized testing requirement for admission.

Boston University
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship Competition

The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholarship acknowledges those students who have embraced the memory and ideals of one of Boston University’s most prominent alumni, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. (STH '55). The scholarship provides renewable full-tuition awards for academically gifted students with proven leadership abilities and a strong commitment to social justice and community involvement. These students will epitomize the importance of different cultures on Boston University's campus and will assist in promoting a warm, welcoming atmosphere for students from all backgrounds.

Each candidate must submit a complete application for admission to one of the undergraduate degree programs at Boston University together with a recommendation from a teacher, mentor, or advisor assessing the student’s potential to contribute significantly to the Boston University community and to society, and a 500-word essay. The application for admission, essay, and recommendation form must all be submitted by December 1. Please read the information sheet for more details.

    The Boston University Trustee Scholars Program has recognized students who
have outstanding academic ability and the potential to inspire fellow students to excel.  Recipients are awarded a renewable scholarship covering the cost of full tuition and mandatory fees, and are invited
to participate in specially organized academic and cultural events.
     Scholars are chosen from a pool of applicants who have been nominated by the principal or headmaster of their high school. Trustee Scholars are typically in the top 3 percent of their high school classes—many with perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Their average score on the SAT I: Reasoning Test is 1517, on the SAT II: Writing Test is 770, and the ACT average score is 33. Trustee Scholars had a high school GPA of 3.90.

SAE Engineering Scholarship Program

 In recognition of the important contributions made by engineers in improving the quality of our lives, particularly those related to mobility, SAE is proud to be able to offer a number of scholarships to qualified students who are interested in the study of engineering and related sciences.   

There are two scholarship types:
 Undesignated Scholarships: These corporate sponsored scholarships range in value from $1,000 to $6,000.  To qualify, the applicant must enroll in an engineering program accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology.  Application.

 University Sponsored Scholarships:  These scholarships are sponsored by participating universities and colleges, and range in value from $400 to full tuition.  To qualify, the applicant must attend the named university and enroll in a specific program of engineering, if required.

The Secretary of the State is sponsoring the annual Excellence in Citizenship Award for twelfth grade students. This award recognizes outstanding young people in our state who are active participants in the life of their community and their school.

Through the Excellence in Citizenship Award program, one-twelfth grade student from each participating school is recognized for active participation in civic community activities, good scholarship and school involvement. We also select one award-winning student per congressional district to receive a $250.00 scholarship. This selection will be based on the nominating documentation received.

Criteria:
This award recognizes one graduating senior from each CT school who demonstrates the qualities of active participation in civic or community activities, good scholarship and school involvement.

The following specific criteria apply:

  • Volunteer Service to the community (i.e. service to health care facilities, senior citizen groups, shelters, day care centers).
  • Involvement in citizenship or character building organizations (i.e. Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, Religious Groups).
  • Good scholastic record
  • Participation in student government programs or activities.
  • Faithful school attendance
  • Leadership ability to motivate others to actions to benefit the community.

Quinnipiac University
Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE)

Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) is a student-run business organization on Quinnipiac University’s campus. SIFE is community-service oriented and works on various projects throughout the school year to benefit Quinnipiac’s student community, as well as the surrounding community.

We are offering a Quinnipiac University Students In Free Enterprise Scholarship to high school seniors interested in going into business in college. To be eligible for the scholarship, students must complete an application and essay, be a senior in high school applying to college, and interested in business. The winner will receive a $500 scholarship to be put towards their college career. The first and second runner-ups will receive a $100 and $50 gift card to Bed, Bath, and Beyond. The application and essay must be received by December 11.

Sam Walton Community Scholarship

Application Period: November 1 - January 12

Each operating Wal-Mart Store and SAM'S CLUB is eligible to award two $1,000 scholarships to qualifying local high school seniors. Students must be graduating high school seniors and must not be an Associate of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., or be the child/dependent of an Associate of Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. This award is used for the student's freshman year tuition, books, fees and on-campus room and board at an approved, accredited U.S. college or university. As many as 6,000 of these awards may be given during the upcoming year to graduating high school seniors and is limited to those students with no affiliation to Wal-Mart Stores, Inc.

All local winners will automatically be entered into a state competition for a chance to win an additional $4,000 scholarship, for a total award of $5,000. All state winners will then be automatically entered into a national competition for a chance to win an additional $20,000 scholarship, for a total scholarship award of $25,000! Hitachi Yoshiyama Award

This Award recognizes exemplary service and community involvement rather than academic achievement.

The Award is accompanied by a gift of $5,000, dispensed over two years. Recipients may use the Award at their discretion.

It is NOT a scholarship program.

Criteria for Eligibility:

Award selection is based upon the significance and extent of the nominee's service to the community. The panel considers the relevance of these activities to addressing profound community and societal problems.

Award recipients represent the diversity of American society and exemplify the outstanding achievement of America's young people.

Yoshiyama Award selection is based upon service and the opportunity for longer-term social change rather than on academic achievement or extracurricular activities.

To be eligible to receive this Award, candidates must be:

  • Graduating high school seniors in the United States and U.S. territories. (Nominees need not be college bound.)
  • Individuals who's activities impacted a socially, economically, or culturally isolated area.
  • Nominated by someone familiar with their service (clergy, school official, teacher, service agency representative, etc.). Family members may not nominate their relatives and students may not nominate themselves.
  • Individuals whose activities created longer-term, sustainable social change.
  • Individuals whose service has surpassed what is ordinarily expected of a socially responsible citizen.
  • Individuals who have demonstrated self-motivation, leadership, creativity, dedication, and commitment in pursuing their service.
  • Individuals who have made a conscious effort to involve and inspire others to participate in community action.

AWARDS FOR EXCELLENCE Scholarship
Scholarships to Students Who Will Make a World of Difference
Deadline: December 5, 2006

Awards for Excellence is AFS-USA’s premier merit-based scholarship program. More than $200,000 in full and partial scholarships will be awarded to students who best exhibit academic excellence (minimum 3.5 GPA on 4.0 scale or equivalent), leadership, and community service. The judging panel will be especially interested in applicants who not only meet the scholarship criteria, but best exhibit, through their activities, actions, or essays, what it means to be an ambassador. The next scholarships to be awarded can be applied toward any AFS program departing in the summer or fall of 2007 or winter of 2008.

Students must be nominated by a high school teacher, principal, guidance counselor, or National Honor Society Advisor to be eligible. Nominations must be received by December 5, 2006.

In total, we will award 120 scholarships for programs that take place in the summer or fall of 2007 or winter of 2008. Ten full-tuition scholarships will be awarded. The remaining scholarships will be either $2500 or $1000. This scholarship program is competitive. Last year AFS received over 1,400 nominations for the 120 scholarships.

Congress-Bundestag Scholars
Deadline: December 16

Congress-Bundestag scholars experience German life firsthand. Living abroad, they will be immersed in a new culture and new surroundings every day. They will have an unequaled opportunity to develop new interests, explore new directions, and build self-confidence and self reliance.

What is the selection process for CB students?

1. To participate in the 2007-2008 academic year program to Germany, you must:
• Be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
• Have a GPA of 3.0 or better on a 4.0 scale
• Be between 15 and 18 years of age at the start of the program
• If you wish to apply through AFS, you must reside in any of the following regions:
CT, D.C., DE, MA, MD, ME, NH, NJ, NY, OH, PA, RI, or VT
• Please note that previous study of the German language is NOT required. Language preparation is offered while on program.

If you are an educator or community leader, and you know of an outstanding student who meets the above prerequisites, please nominate the student by completing and mailing/faxing the Congress-Bundestag Nomination Form. Nomination forms are not required, but are highly encouraged. Though there is no deadline for the nomination forms, please do allow enough time for your nominees to complete the CB application by the December 16 postmark deadline.

Toyota Community Scholars Program

     The Toyota Community Scholars program awards 100 renewable scholarships valued at $10,000 and $20,000 over four years to outstanding high school seniors for excellence in academics and for making meaningful service contributions to their schools and their communities.
     The Program is designed to provide financial support and encouragement to students who demonstrate a commitment to academic excellence and a willingness to contribute to the betterment of their schools and their communities.
     Participating high schools are asked to select a student who best exemplifies the outstanding academic leadership and dedication to community service the scholarship program seeks to recognize.

The student identified as the nominee must:

  • be a high school senior with a grade point average of 3.0 or better
  • be actively involved in a service organization or project that has a positive impact on the school
  •  and/or community
  • be a U.S. citizen; U.S. National; or U.S. permanent resident.
  • plan to pursue an undergraduate degree at an accredited four-year college or university in the United States.

AXA Achievement Scholarship
in association with U.S. News and World Report

The AXA Achievement Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to young people throughout the nation.

Winners on the State and National levels

State Winners
Fifty-two winners – one from each state, the District of Colombia and Puerto Rico – are selected by our nonprofit partner, Scholarship America, to receive one-time scholarship awards of $10,000 each.

National Winners
From the pool of 52 state winners, ten are selected as national winners and earn an additional one-time scholarship of $15,000. This brings the top AXA Achievers total scholarship awards to $25,000 each. These top ten also receive a laptop computer and the offer of an internship with AXA.

Our scholarships winners are known as AXA Achievers. They are ethnically and economically diverse, but they share these qualities:

AXA Achievement is a multi-faceted scholarship program, awarding more than $1.3 million a year in scholarships on the national and local levels. It includes:

AXA Achievement Scholarship in association with U.S. News & World Report provides $670,000 in annual scholarships to youth throughout the nation. Fifty-two scholarship recipients, known as AXA Achievers, are selected — one from each state, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.

AXA Achievement Community Scholarship Program provides advice and access to young people and their parents, right in the local communities where AXA people live and work.

National Scholarship Month takes place each May to celebrate the current level of scholarship support from the private sector, while at the same time calling for broader participation and renewed commitment. AXA is the Presenting Sponsor of National Scholarship Month.

AXA Day of Service. Our annual, nationwide volunteer event involving AXA people in projects at nonprofit organizations that help youth achieve.

Families of Freedom 2: Building Futures through Education. AXA Foundation funding is providing scholarships for financially impacted families in lower Manhattan who have lost businesses, jobs or income as a result of the September 11 attacks.

AXA Family Scholarship provides scholarships for children of AXA employees and financial professionals.

    Available to graduating high school seniors with plans to enroll at a two-year or four-year institution.
  • Gates Millennium Scholarship Program
    Available to graduating high school seniors with plans to enroll in a college or university in the Fall, 2007.

    Available to graduating high school seniors nationwide who plan to enroll at a four-year institution.

It is available to graduating high school seniors who have concrete plans to attend a community college or four-year institution full-time the upcoming academic year. Award amounts generally range from $1,000 to $2,500.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a graduating high school senior
  • Be of Hispanic heritage
  • Be a U.S. Citizen or a legal permanent resident with permanent resident card or passport stamped I-551 (not expired)
  • Be enrolled full-time in a degree-seeking program at a U.S. accredited college or university in the U.S., Puerto Rico, or U.S. Virgin Islands for the upcoming academic year (enrollment is verified in the Fall)
  • Have a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale (or the equivalent)
  • Must prove application for Federal Financial Aid

New London County Farm and Home Bureau, Inc. Scholarship

    This $500.00 scholarship was established to encourage a high school graduating senior or presently enrolled student to continue his/her education at an accredited college. No awardees may receive this scholarship more than two years.

Eligibility Requirements and Guidelines:

  • Applicants must be sons or daughters of New London county Farm Bureau Families holding membership for the past three years in the Connecticut Farm Bureau Organization.
  • Two letters of recommendation, the writers to be other than family members, must accompany application.
  • Applicants must provide an official high school / college transcript at date of application or grade point average to date if presently enrolled in college.
  • A letter should be attached stating applicant's career plans and goals, and why he/she should be awarded this scholarship.
  • A letter of support should be included from school principal, guidance counselor or faculty adviser.
  • A personal interview may be required
The completed application with all required materials must be returned by December 15, 2001 to Secretary, New London County Farm and Home Bureau, Inc., 160 Hebron Turnpike, Lebanon, CT  06354.

The winner will be notified in January.

A check in the name of the winning candidate will be sent directly to the college of choice to apply to second semester charges.

The purpose of the tour is to promote higher education with an emphasis on Historically Black Colleges & Universities. This program helps to inform students on the various options available to them after high school.

Students must submit an application, school transcript and two letters of recommendation from a school administrator and complete an interview. The interview will be scheduled after all required documentation is received. Any high school student completing the application process is eligible. The college tour includes 3 mandatory workshops. Students who fail to attend these workshops may be disqualified from the tour.

America's  Connecticut Junior Miss Scholarship Program

High school girls are eligible if they have never been married and are U.S. citizens.  They are also required to be legal residents of the district or state they represent when participating in local and state finals.  The young women must also be high school seniors for the school year in which the national finals are held.

The Anne Ford Scholarship
Deadline: 12/31 Annually

     The Anne Ford Scholarship is a $10,000 award given to a high school senior with an identified learning disability (LD) who is pursuing an undergraduate degree.

The ideal candidate is a high school senior who has faced the challenges of having a learning disability; is committed to completing a college degree and setting career goals; has demonstrated perseverance; embraces new opportunities; has a well-rounded perspective shaped by experiences in school, in the community, and with family and friends; understands how LD affects his/her life and recognizes the importance of self-advocacy; believes in contributing to society in a way that increases the opportunities for individuals with learning disabilities; and will feel comfortable serving as a role model for others who struggle with LD.

Eligibility and Selection Criteria

The National Center for Learning Disabilities, Inc. (NCLD) is seeking applicants for the Anne Ford Scholarship, which is available to students of high merit with an identified learning disability (LD) in public or private secondary schools. To be eligible for the Anne Ford Scholarship, an applicant must:

  • Have an overall grade point average of 3.0 or higher
  • Have demonstrated financial need
  • Show documentation of an identified learning disability
    Note: ADD/ADHD alone is not considered a learning disability; eligible candidates with ADD/ADHD must also provide documentation of a specific learning disability
  • Be a U.S. Citizen
  • Be enrolled as a senior in high school with the intention of pursuing an undergraduate degree

Students of minority background are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must also submit their high school transcripts, portfolios (if applicable), three (3)  letters of recommendation (at least one from a teacher), a financial statement, and SAT/ACT scores.

VFW Military Family Scholarship
Deadline: December 31 - Annually

Since 1899, the Veterans of Foreign Wars has sought ways to help and encourage those veterans in uniform and recently discharged and their families.
In recent years, we have received numerous requests from these individuals requesting
dollars for education and training. The VFW Military Family Scholarship is our response to those requests.

The VFW's Military Family Scholarship program provides 25 $3,000 scholarships annually to VFW members who are currently serving in uniform or have been discharged within the 12 months before the December 31 deadline.

The scholarships will be awarded to five members from each branch of service (Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force and Coast Guard) during the first quarter of the year following the deadline.
