RE: 2008-09 ROBERT C. BYRD HONORS SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

Effective immediately the Connecticut Department of Higher Education will begin accepting Composite ACT Scores, in place of SAT scores, for students who take the ACT.

As you know the 2008-2009 Robert C. Byrd Scholarship application does not ask for ACT scores. Therefore, to accommodate this change you may write the ACT composite score in the SAT box in Section B of the application. When entering the ACT score please write “ACT” and the score next to it. If you are submitting an application with the ACT score, do not put any numbers in the “SAT Math”, “SAT Critical Reading” or “SAT Writing” fields.

As a result of this change, students may now qualify for the program if they rank in the top 2% of their junior year class, or have a minimum SAT score of 2100, or a minimum ACT score of 32.

We hope that by adding the ACT score as a qualifier we can accommodate more of your students who may be eligible to apply for the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship. If you should have any questions about this change, please call me at (860) 947-1856 or email me at mfrench@ctdhe.org.

Thank you for your assistance with the Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program. Posted: 1/29/08

Who is Dale E. Fridell?

Dale Fridell was the grandfather of StraightForward Media CEO Josh Barsch. Dale was born in 1918 on a family farm in Denton, Kansas. He had seven brothers and sisters and grew knowing that for the family to run smoothly, everyone had to do their part. He carried that ethic with him his entire life, recognizing that when each of us makes a contribution, whether in a family, the work place or the world, all of us benefit.

Dale served his country for seven years during World War II. College wasn’t an option for him, but he would have done well at it, as he did in all things he set his mind to. He was married and raised a family and contributed to society in a number of ways; running a service station/café with his wife, participating in Boy Scouts with his son and serving in many community organizations with his family and friends.

Dale was a man who didn’t have to be asked to help out; he was always one step ahead in offering his assistance. In his later years, he developed Alzheimer’s disease, but he fought to retain his dignity until he couldn’t fight any longer. He left his wife, children and grandchildren a legacy of honesty, loving and kindness. It's because of this that the Dale E. Fridell Scholarship was created in his memory.
