Attention Sophomores Class of 2011

  Welcome Back
November 9, Attention Sophomores
Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY)
Deadline: 11/9/ ~ See Dr. Phillips

The mission of HOBY is to seek out, recognize and develop leadership potential commencing with high school sophomores.

The Seminars bring together the best of two worlds: highs school sophomores with demonstrated leadership qualities tomorrow's leaders with today's leaders who have distinguished themselves in business, education, government, the arts and sciences, and the professions. Through intense but informal discussions with these persons and among themselves, HOBY leaders get a realistic look at their nation, its people and their role in the world community.

Montville High School can name ONE sophomore representative, selected on leadership ability, sensitivity to others and desire to communicate knowledge to peers. The emphasis is on personal incentive and leadership potential.

Any interested sophomore MUST See Dr. Phillips, in the School Counseling office,

ATTENTION JUNIORS

It is still possible for you to sign up for the Career College Pathways Program (formerly called “Tech Prep”) at Three Rivers Community College.

Career College Pathways is a partnership program with Three Rivers Community College for students at Montville High School interested in general engineering technology, manufacturing engineering technology, early childhood education, hospitality management, accounting/business administration, or fire technology. Through this program, students can earn dual credit (Montville High School and Three Rivers at the same time) for certain specific courses. Credits may be transferable from Three Rivers to other colleges.

Students usually sign up during the tenth grade, and successfully complete all designated partnership courses before they graduate; however, juniors may still apply at this time. There is no cost, no obligation to attend Three Rivers upon graduation, and all classes are taught at Montville High School as part of the regular schedule.

To enter the program, an application must be completed. If you are interested, please see your school counselor before October 29.

Friday, May 16 Student Advisory Council on Education (SSACE)
The Connecticut Association of Schools
Any interested student MUST see Dr. Phillips by Friday, May 16, 2008

MHS is invited to nominate a student to be considered for service as a member of the State Student Advisory council on Education (SSACE). The Council gives Connecticut students a voice in education planning and enables the State Board of Education, the Commissioner of Education, State Department of Education personnel, the Governor, and the state legislators to become familiar with high school students' perspectives on key issues.

SSACE meets regularly with the Commissioner of Education, and on occasion with the Governor, to reflect student opinion in areas of concern in the high schools. The Council meets seven times per year. Members write position papers on important topics in education, conduct the statewide Challenge to Educational Citizenship Awards program, and through their decisions and activities learn from each other about citizenship, leadership, and responsibility.

Meetings take place on school days from 9:30 AM to 12:15 PM at the State Department of Education in Hartford . The student nominated, in addition to being capable of thoughtful expression within a group, needs to be able to miss up to seven school days and provide his or her own transportation to and from Hartford .

MHS is invited to nominate one student from our school who we think is up to this task. This does not have to be the top-ranked student or president of an important organization. It does have to be a dependable person of good character capable of giving wise counsel to key educational decision-makers.

Any interested student MUST see Dr. Phillips by Friday, May 16.

Attention Seniors Class of 2009

SENIOR DUES

Senior fees and all senior debts MUST be paid before a senior purchases a prom ticket, goes on the Senior Outing, or expects to graduate. This includes money owed for lost/damaged textbooks, library books, athletic equipment/uniforms, project fees, etc. Seniors should check the list before paying their senior fees.

REMINDER

Read the Counseling and Career News when distributed for up-to-date Scholarship information.

Listen for announcements regarding College/University Representative that will be visiting MHS.
View the Visitation Schedule and Come visit with them in the Career Resource Center.

Interested Seniors should see Dr. Phillips as soon as possible
ATTENTION SENIORS

Project TLC (Technology.Learning.Community) is a learning community for students in two-year associate degree programs in the fields of engineering technology. Throughout the experience, students will be mentored by a technology advisor. Students will also participate in a paid Summer Institute to prepare for the college experience. Project TLC offers support to foster self-confidence and to assure student success as participants progress from Three Rivers to either a four-year college or the workplace. This program can be of very great benefit to students who may be “on the fence” about college and may feel limited financially or academically. Students should meet the following criteria:

  • Be interested in technology, science, and engineering
  • Have completed Algebra 2 by graduation
  • Show academic promise (there is no GPA requirement)
  • Be a senior and begin the program in August, 2008
  • Have not committed to any particular college, or may believe college is not an option for them
  • May feel they will need extra support to be successful academically in college
The following technology programs are included in the TLC program:
  • Civil Engineering Technology
  • Electrical Engineering Technology
  • Environmental Engineering Technology
  • General Engineering Technology
  • Fire Technology and Administration
  • Laser and Fiber Optic Technology
  • Manufacturing Engineering Technology
  • Mechanical Engineering Technology
  • Architectural Design Technology
  • Computer Science Technology

Students interested must see Dr. Phillips as soon as possible.

PSAT/NMSQT

The Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) will be given to all juniors on
Wednesday, October 17, from 7:35-10:35.

This is an excellent practice test for the SAT Reasoning Test, which is required by most colleges, and is also the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarships. The PSAT provides a comprehensive assessment of critical reading, mathematical reasoning, and writing skills. The student report provides question-by-question analysis along with specific suggestions on how to improve academic skills.

Montville Public Schools is paying the cost of the PSAT for all juniors, and they are automatically registered.

Juniors will be receiving a descriptive booklet along with a practice PSAT shortly.
On October 17, all juniors are to report to assigned areas at the first homeroom bell for the testing, which will last through Blocks 1 and 2 and end before the first lunch period.

If you wish further information about the PSAT, log on to www.collegeboard.com click on the “students” or “parents” button on the upper right, and look for the PSAT information.

The PSAT will not be administered this year to sophomores at Montville High School due to space limitations.

See your counselor for more information.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Should we have a delay due to the weather, that day will be a regular A/B day without CAPT.
We will make up the CAPT on the very next day (as long as there is not another delay – hope this makes sense!).
  • Students coming to school after testing need to eat lunch prior to arriving.
