After students have determined which colleges
or universities they wish to apply to, the following procedures should
be followed:
Check to make sure requirements regarding SAT
I, SAT II, or ACT are met.
Obtain complete applications. Make an extra
copy for a rough draft. Check on any option for applying on-line.
Make sure your counselor has a complete and
updated list of school and community activities, honors received,
and special projects you have done.
Request letters of recommendation at least
three weeks in advance of the deadline.
Write any required or optional essays, and
have them checked by the English teacher or other appropriate
person.
Complete the application – proofread
it carefully.
Obtain a transcript release form from the School
Counseling secretary, and make sure it is correctly filled out
(including social security number) and signed by a parent or guardian.
A separate transcript request form must be filled out for each
application.
Take the completed application to the School
Counseling office at least two weeks in advance of the deadline.
Make sure all components of the application are in place; including
all signatures, the check for the application fee, and the signed
transcript request form. Note that many colleges and universities
require a separate application for financial aid.
Counselors will review the application, sign
transcripts, and mail the complete application packet.
It is not recommended that students send applications
on their own. It is better for the college or university to receive
them directly from Montville High School in one packet. Unless
the application asks that letters of recommendation be sent directly
by their author, these should also be included with the entire
application.
The Department of School Counseling will maintain
letters of recommendation in students’ cumulative folders,
and duplicate them as needed for further applications to colleges
or for scholarships.
Make sure all applications are
completed and mailed well before the deadline.
Make sure that you inform
of any mid-year progress reports that are requested by the college
or university.
