Dr.
Charles E. Murphy served as Superintendent of Schools in
Montville for seventeen years. During his tenure, three
elementary schools, one high school, and various school
additions were completed. Dr.
Murphy provided leadership in the initiation of this
building. He was instrumental in writing the educational
specifications and offered much assistance in the
formulation of the preliminary and final plans. Up to the
time of his death, he played a very active part in the
construction of this school. This educational plant, a
lasting monument to an outstanding educator, will continue
the work Dr. Charles E. Murphy began in Montville in
1946.
He also
provided excellent educational leadership during the years of most
rapid growth in town. He was not only concerned with physical aspects
of the educational program but had a deep feeling for the educational
needs of each individual student. He was a dedicated educator who
made a lasting impression on the lives of many of his former students
and colleagues. As a tribute to his dedication, a writing award was
established in his honor. This award is presented to students who
demonstrate outstanding creative writing in grades five through
twelve.
