A message from the Principal

Lorilyn Caron

I would like to introduce you to Mohegan Elementary School. Mohegan School educates children from kindergarten through the fifth grade. Students take classes in art, music, physical education, in addition to the core academic subject areas. In grades one through five, students have the opportunity to take Spanish, and kindergarten through second grade students have a regularly scheduled library period each week. Students in grades three through five complete research assignments and have projects that are coordinated by their classroom teacher and the library media specialist. Mohegan School offers special education services from full inclusion in general education classes with a team teaching approach, to a more self-contained program, depending on individual student needs.

Mohegan School teachers and staff members have a commitment to educate the whole child, so children are viewed as unique individuals whose differences are celebrated as educational teams work to maximize learning for each student. There are varied educational opportunities available to students, while the cultivation of good character building and enhancing positive self-esteem is a paramount concern for us all.

One of the most essential elements of any successful educational experience for a child is the team of people working together on the child’s behalf. Parents play an integral role in their child’s education. Providing adequate rest, a balanced diet and on-going communication with the child’s teacher is a large part of a parent’s role in the education of their child. Teachers and paraprofessionals must create a safe and nurturing environment that supports educational risk-taking within a stimulating academic setting. Children themselves must approach school with the idea that their education is vital to their success as citizens. The need for communication between all three parties is essential to maximize student learning. The role of any administrator is to assist in this relationship and to offer ways to foster growth between the three parties.

Please take an active role in your child’s education. Speaking with your child’s teacher is the first way for you to solve any problems that may arise. Please know that I am available to help you as well. Using the email system is most effective as I am able to access mail from school and at home. I can be reached at Mohegan School at 848-9261 as well. I look forward to working with you and your child.
