Grade 2

Second Grade Mission Statement

The teachers in second grade will provide a stimulating and child-based atmosphere within each classroom. Students will grow and develop in a cooperative and nurturing environment where children are encouraged to do this bbest and show pride in their accomplishments. We welcome the participation of parents and the community, while valuing open communication between school and home.

Reading and Learning
The children began the year with the award winning book Frog and Toad Are Friends. This Caldecott Honor book is a novel divided into five short, humorous stories. These stories reflect the give-and-take of a much celebrated friendship. This book provided the children the opportunity to expand into the area of science by learning more about frogs and toads.

Second graders are presently reading the book Long Way to a New Land by Joan Sandin. The theme of this book is "Yesterday". It is the story of a young boy and his family who immigrate to America from Sweden in the 1800s. To enrich the story and provide a better understanding of this time, the second grade will take a field trip to Mystic Seaport November 3rd.

The next theme of our reading program is imagination, thought, and humor. The class book for this theme is titled Imogene's Antlers by David Small.

Children will be encouraged during this time to select, listen, and discuss humorous, make believe stories. Some authors to consider would be Bill Peet, Dr. Seuss, and William Steig.
