Join the Summer Reading Challenge!!
June 2008
Dear Parents and Guardians:
We are pleased to announce MontvilleŐs continued participation in the GovernorŐs Connecticut Summer Reading Challenge and to provide you with our suggested book lists for summer reading at each grade level. Literacy instruction is a priority across the grade levels and in all subject areas in Montville, and it is our goal to develop a lifelong habit of reading in all our students. Summer is a great time to help your child develop a love for books and reading.
Research shows that students who read 20-30 minutes each day can gain one full yearŐs growth in reading fluency and comprehension during the summer months. To help maintain your childŐs reading gains from this year to next year and to extend his/her progress, the districtŐs teachers and administrators encourage you to have your child read daily. Students should read a minimum of two hours each week over the summer.
You may read books aloud to your child or your child may read them independently. To select a book at your childŐs independent reading level, ask him/her to read one page of the book aloud. If he or she makes more than five errors, the book is too difficult for independent reading.
Please feel free to select books of your childŐs choice or use the enclosed lists of books. School staff and the library/media specialists are ready and willing to help you plan for an enjoyable summer reading experience with your child.
It is our expectation that every elementary school child will participate in the GovernorŐs Reading Challenge and the Montville Summer Reading Program by completing the attached form. Please return this form to your childŐs teacher by September 12, 2008. This form is also available on the Montville Public School web site.
Happy reading and enjoy the summer!
Sincerely,
Superintendent of Schools
